Life in Community

  Have you ever considered the over abundance of social media in our world today.  There is Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, Instagram, and so much more.  There seems to be a new social media platform every year.  Why is that?  Because it is not good for any of us to be alone.  We need each other.  Ever stop to think about the stories from the early lockdowns.  We all strove to do something with others especially when it became no longer proper or safe to gather together.  Our first reaction to lockdown was a desire to be with others.  Whether it was on Zoom, FaceTime, Google Duo, or some other video service, we wanted to be with others.  That is our nature.  God created us to be that way.  Genesis tells us that it is not good for man to be alone; therefore, God created a life mate for him.  We are meant to be in community with each other.  

It can be difficult to think about the Christian walk being more than just going to church on Sundays while the rest of the week is for one's own spiritual disciplines and growth, but it is true.  We are made to be in community with one another more than we realize.  One cannot merely grow in Christ by himself.  Jesus was not that way.  He always went to commune with His Father.  He was always in communion with the Father.  We are called to be the church as a whole which is His bride.  Only together do we truly live and grow.  Personal disciplines are great, but community helps us stay on the right track.

Wesley and Christian Perfection

              Perfection is a word we use to explain when something is faultless.   Perfection comes with the mindset there can be no blemish.   A perfect game in baseball means no hits and no walks.   A perfect season means no losses or ties if the sport allows for ties.   A perfect grade means no wrong answers.   So, what does Christian Perfection mean?   Does this mean a Christian with no blemishes on their record?   They live without sin?   Many think this is what John Wesley taught when he preached Christian Perfection and entire sanctification.   There became a counterpoint that Wesley said we could be perfect in this world.   While Wesley used the term perfection, he did not stick to a faultless definition of perfection.   He chose to describe perfection as completion.   To Wesley, Christian Perfection was a perfection in love.   Love is the summation of ...

              Have you ever heard this chorus? Grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that will pardon and cleanse within; Grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that is greater than all our sin!             It is an older hymn chorus.   I can remember my home church singing this chorus often.   We would sing it as an after prayer song or even a chorus for Wednesday night bible study.   The words are simple.   The meaning is beyond simple.   What is this grace greater than all our sin?   To answer that, one must first look to how great our sin is.   For the nature of sin is to separate us from God.   Sin is an act of rebellion against God.   God is pure and holy; therefore, He cannot be around any sort of sin.   God’s holiness cannot abide with our sinfulness.   By our very nature, we will always fail God.   We are a...
